History
The Porch restaurant on Anna Maria Island is located at 9707 Gulf Drive, and you might be surprised to learn that the building this restaurant sits in was built in 1913, making it one of the first rental homes on the island. It was initially sold to Professor Nichols as a winter home and rental home, but over the years, the building has been through many changes and served many purposes, including once operating as a daycare. Sign of the Mermaid was the original name of a restaurant in this building that served the people of the area for 30 years!
The history of the location is amazing, and throughout the years, many pieces of historical artifacts have been found in the restaurant that dates back to its previous endeavors. For example, a sign from the Sign of the Mermaid restaurant and the colorful Crayola wallpaper are a couple of items found during the construction and restoration process of the current building.
The restaurant makes it a point to its visitors that when they dine here and as they restore the building, the history will always be preserved, and customers are encouraged to share their pictures of what the location has looked like throughout the years.
