Museum History

The history of The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature begins in 1947 when it first opened its doors on Bradenton’s Memorial Pier, originally known as the South Florida Museum. Fast-forward to 1966, the museum found a new home on 10th Street West and saw the addition of the illustrious Bishop Planetarium, thanks to the generosity of local philanthropists Edward and Lillian Bishop. This milestone allowed visitors to glimpse into the cosmos right in the heart of Bradenton. Through the decades, the museum has gracefully evolved. Following a devastating electrical fire in 2001, the museum embarked on a transformative journey. By 2005, the revitalized state-of-the-art Planetarium welcomed back curious minds. Again, in 2018, the museum expanded, unveiling innovative spaces like the North Education Center and the Mosaic Backyard Universe, truly cementing its reputation as a hub of science and nature appreciation. In 2016, marking a significant milestone, the museum embraced its new identity as The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, continuing its legacy of exceptional education and intriguing exhibitions for all.
