History
In 1896, Sam and Annie Cobb homesteaded land on Anna Maria island where Holmes Beach is located today. Mr. John Jones and Jose Casanas later joined them. Mr. Jones started chartering boats to and from Tampa to Cuba. Mr. Jose Casanas came from the Canary Islands in hopes of finding a mullet fishing location.
The island received its first post office in the year 1902, which was located at the Cobb’s home.
The city is named after developer Jack Holmes, who came to the island after World War II and developed a 600-acre community. Halsey T. Tichenor served as the first mayor on the island. The area was once all jungle and was later developed into sandy roads. Developers had to deal with panthers, wildcats, and rattlesnakes in their efforts to develop the island. Holmes Beach was the filming location for the movie On an Island With You, which brought stars Ricardo Montalban, Peter Lawford, Cyd Charrise, and Esther Williams to the island. Things to Do
There are, of course, tons of water-based things to do on Holmes Beach, such as jet skiing, swimming, sailing, fishing, and parasailing. If you would like, you can rent your boat or you can go out with a charter company to participate in a variety of water activities. If you prefer to remain on land, there are bike trails, trolley trips, and plenty of areas for picnicking.
Among Anna Maria Island’s most popular beaches is Manatee Public Beach in Holmes Beach. There is lots of sand and sun, with a variety of amenities. It is a family-friendly beach ideal for swimming or sunbathing. There are bathrooms, a Tiki bar, and a place where umbrellas and chairs can be rented.
Tampa Bay Fishing with Captain Matt is a great way to enjoy local fishing. Captain Matt will take you to the best fishing areas, where you’re sure to catch whatever it is that you hope to find. Receive tips from an experienced Captain and fisherman along the way! Visitors can book a 24-foot Sheaffer, which is what is often preferred since it is a top-rated fishing boat. This excursion is perfect for all ages and skill levels.
